Phillies to wear Pillbox hats, throwback jerseys twice this weekend

As the Philadelphia Phillies continue their series with the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend, they will be wearing some special uniforms.

Matt Breen of Philly.com was among those that noted earlier this season that the Phillies would wear a unique throwback jersey when they played Brewers on June 3 and June 5. So this evening and Sunday, the Phillies will wear Pillbox hats and jerseys that feature several throwbacks to 1976, the 100th season of the National League.

Todd Radom of Sporting News dug up a rare image of these jerseys being worn in a 1976 game, when pitcher Larry Christenson wore the jersey for the Phillies on Opening Day.

Special jerseys

Our historical columnist Matt Albertson noted that despite any images that make this jersey/hat combination look as though it is more like the modern red that the Phillies wear than the Burgundy red that they did during this era, these jerseys are Burgundy.

In addition to the throwback jerseys this weekend, the Phillies are also giving away a cool t-shirt jersey to fans 14 and under Saturday. The T-shirt will look like a normal Aaron Nola T-shirt jersey, but instead of it being Phillies colors, it will be a white shirt with purple and gold writing like the jerseys of Nola's college team, the LSU Tigers.
