While many Philadelphia Phillies fans cried upon learning that the team had traded long-time catcher Carlos Ruiz to the Los Angeles Dodgers, former Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis and current ace Clayton Kershaw reportedly viewed the situation in a different, yet very similar way.
According to Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times, Ellis, who was acquired by the Phillies in the trade, shared an emotional moment with his former battery mate following the news of the trade:
Ellis described Kershaw as "shocked" by the trade. The two men wept together, he said.

Ellis had been Kershaw's personal catcher and had spent his entire career with the Dodgers. While the 35-year-old didn't appear in the big leagues until he was in his late 20's, he seems to have left an impact on the Dodgers, and Kershaw specifically.
While Ellis and Kershaw seem to have forged a close personal relationship, Ellis is probably also devastated to be traded from the National League West leading Dodgers to the all-but mathematically eliminated Phillies. While Ellis was unlikely to return to the Dodgers after the 2016 season, being Kershaw's personal catcher was his meal ticket to a chance at winning a World Series.
The Phillies trade of Ruiz was a nice gesture to the future Wall of Famer, as they gave him a chance to chase his second World Series title. Ellis, who had a defined role in Los Angeles despite well below average offensive production, is essentially a body in Philadelphia. Ellis figures to back up Cameron Rupp for the rest of the season before being let go in free-agency this off-season as the Phillies likely bring Andrew Knapp up to back up Rupp in 2017.
