Playing in the big leagues didn't work out for former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino in 2016, but the 2008 World Series champion reportedly isn't ready to retire just yet.
According to Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball, the 35-year-old outfielder hopes to get a chance to play in 2017:
"Shane Victorino hasn’t given up the idea of playing, and will “regroup” next year to try to find a job."
After injuries limited him to just 71 games between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels in 2015, Victorino hasn't played in the majors in 2016. After struggling with injuries in Spring Training, Victorino didn't make the Chicago Cubs roster, who he signed a minor league deal with in the off-season, and only played in nine Triple-A games before being released. He has been unable to latch on with another club since.
Victorino played for the Phillies from 2005 until July of 2012, when the club traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his time with the club, he won three gold gloves, made two All-Star appearances, led the league in triples twice and helped win the 2008 World Series. During the 2008 NLDS, Victorino also took then Milwaukee Brewers ace CC Sabathia deep for a grand-slam, which has become one of the most iconic moments in team history.
Of the 2008 World Series members that haven't retired yet, it appears possible that Victorino, Ryan Howard, Carlos Ruiz and Jimmy Rollins all could end up retiring after the 2016 season. Whether each of them chooses to retire or is forced into retirement due to lack of interest remains to be seen.
