One of the bigger trades the Phillies have made over the last few years involved dealing closer Ken Giles to the Houston Astros. In return, the Phillies received Brett Oberholtzer, Harold Arauz, Mark Appel, Tom Eshelman and Vince Velasquez. Oberholtzer spent time with the big league club, but has since moved on. Arauz is sporting a 2.18 in seven appearances for Class 'A' Lakewood, Mark Appel is still struggling at Triple-A and Vince Velasquez has made the most impact thus far as a member of the Phillies rotation.
Tom Eshelman will be the latest Giles trade piece that moves up in the organization as the 22-year-old right-hander will make his Ironpigs debut on Monday night in Allentown.
Thomas Eshelman is being promoted from AA Reading and will start tonight for the IronPigs. The 22 y/o took a no-no into 7th in last start.

Eshelman has made five starts this season for Double-A Reading, going 3-0 with a 3.10 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 22 strikeouts and five walks. He is coming off of an outing that saw him take a no-no into the seventh as he held New Hampshire to one run in those seven innings, striking out four and allowing his first home run of the season. He's gone six plus innings in each of his last three starts, all winning decisions, and he credits the Reading staff for helping him succeed.
"I think the Phillies do a great job of having our pitchers learn from everything," he said. "Our coaching staff here does a good job of making us understand the game, understand what pitch to throw. So just trying to keep my ears open and learn as much as I can from our coaches and make each start a good one."
During his seven-inning performance his last time out, Eshelman walked and hit a batter to start the game. They were quickly erased with a double play. Following that, he retired 12 straight en route to six hitless innings. It marked the first time a Reading starter had gone seven innings this season.
Eshelman also has some pop to his bat as well. He helped his own cause back at the end of April with his first minor league home run against Harrisburg.
Eshelman will make his debut against the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Lehigh Valley is coming off of a doubleheader sweep of Buffalo on Sunday.
