By Tim Kelly, Sports Talk Philly editor Phillies to wear throwback jerseys twice in July

For two nights in July, the Philadelphia Phillies will be donning a retro look.

As noted by Glen Macnow and Leslie Gudel's Inside Corner podcast, the Phillies will be wearing their 1970s/1980s era throwback jerseys twice in July:

July 7 and 9 are the Friday and Sunday game's in a three-game set with the San Diego Padres. The Phillies similarly wore these throwback jerseys twice in a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers last summer.

When the Phillies wore these jerseys last summer, they did so with the "pillbox" caps that Odubel Herrera is wearing in the picture at the top of this article. The Phillies were specifically paying homage to the year 1976 with the throwbacks last summer:

As Paul Caputo of SportsLogos.net noted at the time, the throwback to 1976 specifically is what led to the Phillies wearing the "pillbox" caps:

Based off of the Inside Corner tweet, it's unclear whether the Phillies are again wearing these throwbacks with 1976 in mind. The promotional jersey that is shown in the Inside Corner tweet doesn't have the patches on the sleeves like the 1976 one, but that may simply be because it is a promotional jersey. From the Phillies' perspective, the "pillbox" caps and 1976 jersey patches did draw rave reviews when worn last year, so it would make sense to wear that version of the throwback again in 2017.
