When Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts was standing in the on-deck circle at the conclusion of the top of the second in tonight's MLB All-Star Game, he may have been watching a future teammate prevent him from getting to bat.
According to Rob Bradford of WEEI Sports Radio, the Red Sox have serious interest in the Phillies' lone All-Star representative, Pat Neshek:
According to major league sources, the Red Sox have some keen interest in Pat Neshek.
This isn't the first time that Neshek has been linked to the Red Sox. This past weekend, Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals were scouting the 36-year-old righty. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported last month that the bullpen-needy Washington Nationals are also interested in Neshek.
For the Red Sox, Neshek would seem to make quite a bit of sense. The team has gotten impressive seasons from Craig Kimbrel and Joe Kelly, so Neshek would give them another bullpen arm to compete down the stretch of the regular season and potentially into the playoffs. When you consider how deep the bullpens of the Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros are in talent, they would seem to be in a position where they need to make an impact addition to their bullpen.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Neshek seems to be generating quite a bit of interest. At 36, Neshek is having the finest season of his career, as he has a 1.27 ERA and 2.27 FIP in 38 games. He's also in the final season of a contract, so while the Phillies will attempt to find some under-the-radar prospects in any trade for Neshek, teams won't have to part with top prospects to land his services.
