The 30-year-old Johnson is an 11-year veteran of the NBA. He was a second round pick in the 2005 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons.
Johnson spent the majority of his career in Toronto during Bryan Colangelo's tenure as general manager of the Raptors. Colangelo, who now holds the same title with the Sixers has decided to go with a familiar face to bolster the Sixers' bench.
Johnson brings a veteran presence and a good shooting touch. Last season, with the Boston Celtics, Johnson shot 57.6 percent from the field, 40.9 percent from three, and 67 percent from the free-throw line. He averaged 6.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in a hair over 20 minutes per night.
His career field goal percentage and free throw percentage are nearly identical to the percentages he posted last season, and his three-point shooting has been trending up over his career numbers in recent years. Johnson gives the Sixers a versatile power forward, who can play on the block or space the floor if need be. He will provide depth that the team would not have had at the four with Ben Simmons expected to spend at least half of his time as the team's point guard.
The Sixers have approximately $15 million remaining in cap space after the Johnson signing.
