With the Eagles season over after capturing their first Super Bowl championship in franchise history, the coaching carousel in the NFL begins as teams with openings begin to jump in and search for their new hires.
Most of the head coaching positions are filled now, except the Colts HC position, that was left vacant suddenly, when Josh McDaniels changed his mind to stay the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots.
But according to a report from Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Minnesota Vikings have tabbed Eagles' quarterback coach John DeFilippo as their top target for their new offensive coordinator position. Pat Shurmur left the position vacant when he answered the call and became the new head coach of the New York Giants.
The report also mentioned that DeFilippo's interest in the Vikings job is very high and he looks forward to interviewing with them.
The Eagles defeated the Minnesota Vikings 38-7 in the NFC Championship Game this past season.
The Vikings have already interviewed four candidates for the opening. Vikings QB coach Kevin Stefanski, Saints TE coach Dan Campbell, former Seahawks coordinator Darrell Bevell, and Texans QB coach Sean Ryan are all hoping the Vikes pick them.
The team won't be able to interview DeFilippo until after February 14, when the Eagles season officially comes to a close due to all of their end of the season championship duties.
DeFilippo has developed a pretty renowned reputation around the NFL at just 39-years-old. He's already interviewed for two head coaching positions this offseason and was the Cleveland Browns' OC back in 2015, so experience is definitely a big positive factor.
A big issue for the Vikings in the offseason is figuring out what to do with three free agent-to-be quarterbacks in Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater. According to General Manager Rick Spielman, the new offensive coordinator will have a big role in who the new QB will be next year, whether it be those three guys or a free agent like Kirk Cousins.
If there's any coach to fill that void, it has to be Flip, who coached Carson Wentz to a breakout season in 2017, and coached Nick Foles to become Super Bowl LII MVP in Wentz's absence.
