There is an increased amount of chatter around the NBA on what kind of move the Sixers might make heading into Thursday's official trade deadline.
The consensus for most of the year is that the Sixers could really use more wing presence to help out JJ Redick and Robert Covington, someone who can contribute productively on offense and defense.
The Sixers have already been linked to guards Lou Williams and Marco Belinelli, but reports say the Sixers are extremely interested in acquiring Hawks center Dewayne Dedmon.
Dedmon, 28, has had a very big year for Atlanta in an increased role with the team. A guy that has averaged a little over 15 minutes per game in his career, Dedmon is playing in a little over 23 minutes per game this season.
You might recognize his name from the short one-year stint Dedmon spent with the Sixers back in 2014, the peak of "The Process" years. Dedmon averaged 3.4 points and 4.5 rebounds in 11 games with Philadelphia in 2014. Dedmon was acquired by the Sixers in January 2014 on two subsequent 10-day contracts.
Dedmon spent stints with the Magic and the Spurs from 2014 to 2017 before signing with the Hawks last July.
For all intents and purposes, Dedmon has had an absolute career year for the Hawks and late-season pursuits for him are definitely warranted.
In his 34 games this season for the Hawks, Dedmon is averaging 10 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and is shooting 55.8% from the field, 38.3% from beyond the arc.
There are few teams in play for Dedmon it seemed, mentioned by Sean Deveney of Sporting News.
"Dedmon has a player option in his contract for next season and is expected to exercise it in search of a new deal. Ideally, the Hawks could fetch a late first-rounder for Dedmon. But first-round picks will be hard to come by on Thursday, and no one’s giving up a first-round pick for a few months of Dedmon, even as he has played better since returning. Still, the Bucks have expressed interest, sources told Sporting News, and though the Sixers are expected to make a push for help on the wing, there’s been some interest from Philadelphia, which will have four second-round picks in this year’s draft. Oklahoma City, too, is looking for wing help, but has interest in Dedmon for frontcourt depth."
It's unclear what the Sixers are really intending to do with their frontcourt, as getting a center just doesn't feel like it's nearly as much of a need as getting more wing players is.
They still have Amir Johnson and Trevor Booker as stretch-five players on the team with Richaun Holmes on the bench, who seems like the Sixers have almost given up on.
If the Sixers do indeed trade for Dedmon, it's unclear what the future holds for Holmes on the on the Sixers.
Dedmon is currently signed through the 2018-19 season and won't become an unrestricted free agent until the 2019 offseason.
