Rhys Hoskins was able to double in a pinch-hit appearance in Tuesday night's Philadelphia Phillies win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the 25-year-old is out of the starting lineup again Wednesday night. According to manager Gabe Kapler, he may be out of the lineup for the next few weeks.
Hoskins – who fouled a ball off of his mouth, forcing him to leave Monday night's game with two outs in the top of the ninth inning – is likely heading to the disabled list. Kapler told the collective media, which included Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, that Hoskins has a fracture in his jaw:
Rhys Hoskins is a likely DL situation, Gabe Kapler said. A CAT scan revealed a fracture in the jaw. Hoskins will fly to Philly to see team physician for further evaluation. There are surgical and non-surgical options for recovery.

A trip to the disabled list could give Hoskins a chance to mentally reset. Hoskins entered the month of May hitting .303, but was in the midst of the worst month of his short big league career before his injury. Even with Tuesday night's pinch-hit double, Hoskins was batting just .161 with 32 strikeouts in the month of May.
Fortunately for the Phillies, the team has three other players capable of starting in the outfield. The Carlos Santana signing in the offseason, in the opinion of many, gave the Phillies a surplus of starting-caliber outfielders, as it pushed Hoskins from first base to left field. With Odubel Herrera in center field, Nick Williams and Aaron Altherr have competed for much of the playing time in right field. Though neither has performed at an adequate level as a starter, Hoskins' disabled list stint will give them a chance to get the most consistent at-bats they have this season.
Also in Wednesday evening's Phillies lineup is 1B/3B Mitch Walding, who was called up to replace Pedro Florimon, who fractured his foot Tuesday evening. It's not immediately clear who the Phillies would call up to replace Hoskins if he is indeed forced to the disabled list. Roman Quinn, talented but oft-injured, is currently on the disabled list. The only other outfielder on the Phillies 40-man roster is Dylan Cozens. Though Cozens has displayed elite power in the minor leagues, he's currently batting just .224 for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. But given that none of Andrew Pullin, Collin Cowgill or Danny Ortiz has been better, Cozens seems to have the advantage given that he's already on the 40-man roster.
J.P. Crawford figures to return during the time that Hoskins spends on the disabled list, so Scott Kingery could be a candidate to get some outfield at-bats as well.
