After a 12-year career, two-time World Series champion, two-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove Award winner — outfielder Shane Victorino — has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball.
"I think it's time to hang it up and call it a career. I've been blessed with that opportunity as a baseball player … as a little boy growing up in Maui, getting that opportunity to represent my state [and] people," Victorino said. "It's about that time. It's time for me to say, 'it's time for me to move on.' It's time for me to enjoy retirement."
Victorino will officially retire Friday, August 3, before the Philadelphia Phillies' home matchup against the Miami Marlins at 7:05 p.m. The Shane Victorino Foundation announced it will also hold a special celebration that day — from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. — in the Diamond Club at Citizens Bank Park.
"I'll go back to Philly and probably sign a one-day deal, hang it up and call it a career," Victorino said.
The Phillies acquired Victorino from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the December 2004 rule 5 draft. From 2005-2012, Victorino was a mainstay in the Phillies' center field position. In 987 games in red pinstripes, the Wailuku, Hawaii, native slashed .279/.345/.439 with 108 home runs and 489 RBI.
Victorino helped the Phillies to a World Series champion in 2008, and is remembered for his iconic grand slam against CC Sabathia and the Milwaukee Brewers in the Division Series. Five years later, Victorino captured his second and final World Series championship with the Boston Red Sox. Victorino last played in the majors for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2015.

The Phillies' August 2-5 series against the Marlins appears to feature plenty of opportunities for fans to relish the 2008 World Series championship, 10 years ago. On Saturday, August 4, the team will induct former general manager Pat Gillick onto its Wall of Fame, while Sunday's Toyota Phillies' Alumni Day will feature a special tribute in honor of the championship team.
"The Flyin' Hawaiian"'s retirement announcement comes nearly one week after fellow 2008 Phillie, outfielder Jayson Werth, also called an end to his career after 15 seasons.
