The Eagles decided to make an odd roster move today promoting Josh Adams from the practice squad and waiving wide receiver DeAndre Carter.

Promoting Adams comes as no surprise after Sproles was out and both Jay Ajayi and Corey Clement suffered injuries in the loss to the Bucs. That leaves Wendell Smallwood as the lone healthy back on this roster and Smallwood has missed a lot of time over the last two seasons with knee injuries. Adams provides an additional backup for this group.
The questionable move is waiving Carter. Carter was not good registering only one catch for 10 yards, but releasing him leaves the wide receiver corp even thinner. With three of their top four targets out and Shelton Gibson, who was the fifth, appearing as questionable on the injury reports earlier this week, the Eagles only have Nelson Agholor and Kamar Aiken healthy. The Eagles need another option, but space on the 53-man is tight. The Eagles are currently carrying two wide outs (Alshon Jeffery and Mike Wallace) who cannot play in games which is destroying the depth of the Eagles roster right now.
Presumably, Wallace has not been place on IR as the Eagles anticipate he could return this season and they have already placed Richard Rodgers and Mack Hollins on IR. Since only two players can return from IR, the Eagles placing Wallace on IR would mean that one of the three would not be able to rejoin the club this season. Notably two of those players are veterans signed to one-year deals that would have contributed nothing to the team if they did not return. It will be interesting to see how the Eagles address the roster space issue moving forward.
