The NBA offseason will soon be coming to an end as training camp moves closer. The Philadelphia 76ers, at this point in time, look to be content in keeping Brett Brown in the interim general manager role, which has gotten mixed reaction from the fan base. That is likely because we've really gotten no true update with regard to their GM search until managing partner Josh Harris spoke to ESPN at the end of August.
"There are a very small number of elite sitting GMs and they're generally under contract with teams for a long time," Harris told ESPN. "Those situations tend not to change much. For us, we need someone to add real value, which includes looking at young up-and-coming basketball executives and non-traditional candidates.
He didn't reveal any candidates they've spoken to, but shortly after Harris talked to ESPN, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the organization was granted permission to interview three candidates for the open general manager position.
The Philadelphia 76ers have been granted permission to interview three front-office executives – Golden State's Larry Harris, Houston's Gersson Rosas and Utah's Justin Zanik — for the franchise's vacant general manager job, league sources told ESPN.
Larry Harris served as the general manager for the Milwaukee Bucks from 2003-2008. For the past 10 years, he's been with the Warriors as a member of their coaching staff and front office. In 2015, he was promoted to assistant general manager.
Gersson Rosas has spent 18 years with the Houston Rockets and was the Mavericks GM for one season (2013). He is currently in the vice president of basketball operations position with the Rockets.
Lastly, Justin Zanik. He spent several years as an agent before joining the Utah Jazz organization as the assistant general manager in 2012. Zanik worked for the Bucks in 2016, but returned to the Jazz a year later in his assistant GM role.
Time will tell if any of these candidates pan out to be the new Philadelphia 76ers GM. For now, Brett Brown will hold the interim GM title while front office executives Ned Cohen, Marc Eversly and Elton Brand have been promoted to new positions with more responsibilities.
