Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz had a perfect afternoon against the blitz in the opening day victory over Cleveland, completing all eight of his passes when the defense brought at least one extra man on the rush.
Last year, Eagles quarterbacks completed just 51 percent of their passes when blitzed, tied for third-worst in the NFL. After attributing much of the success to his offensive line, the North Dakota State product was asked how he looked so relaxed in his first full game against an NFL defense.
"In college I set a lot of the protections," Wentz said. "So the calls are different now, but at the same time it’s all similar, so I’m used to making protection calls. Kelce and I have been on the same page since I started about a week ago."
In just a matter of days, Wentz has gone from a relatively unknown commodity to one of the hot topics across the NFL landscape. While certainly aware of the whirlwind going on around him, Wentz remains steadfast in his game preparation ahead of the primetime showdown at Soldier Field in Chicago, which includes avoiding sports media as best he can.
"Pretty much," Wentz said. "We’re so busy and then I try not to get caught up in it. Obviously you hear some things people are sharing what’s happening with you, you know friends and family but for the most part I insulate myself from that stuff."
In his debut, Wentz’s stats weren’t exactly jaw-dropping, but it’s obvious when watching the film that the rookie quarterback is comfortable standing tall in the pocket until a receiver gains separation, and already has the alacrity to take advantage of a defensive miscue. Although Wentz is pleased with his debut, he knows the Bears pose another formidable test for the Eagles offense.
"They do some good things," Wentz said. "They’ve got some playmakers. So they’re gonna be a challenge. It’s gonna be a challenge every week. It’s gonna be Monday Night Football, everyone’s gonna be hyped and ready to go. So it’s going to be interesting to see how they attack us, and we’ll be ready for them.
"There’s going to be a lot of excitement for me, and for all of these guys. Playing primetime football, you know, growing up as a kid you watch Monday Night Football all the time. I find every game exciting, I don’t take them for granted, so I’ll be sure to have some fun out there."
