Final: Nationals 5, Phillies 4  ❖  Attendance: 28, 469

Washington D.C. - The Philadelphia Phillies overcame a three-run deficit to tie the game in the eighth, but Trea Turner's second home run was of the walk-off variety as the Washington Nationals took game two of the weekend series, 5-4.

Jake Thompson, despite only lasting 5.1 innings, kept his string of strong starts alive. In his first four big league starts, he posted a 9.78 ERA, but in three starts since then, including tonight, he has a 2.33 ERA. This evening, he struck out five and allowed two runs before exiting in the sixth with one down and two runners on base. Cameron Rupp provided the big blast for the Phillies in the eighth, a three-run homer to even things up at four a piece.

The Phillies and Nationals continue their series on Saturday night as Jerad Eickhoff opposes Nationals ace Max Scherzer at Nationals Park.

WP: Mark Melancon (2-1, 1.87 ERA)  ❖  LP: Frank Hermann (0-2, 9.35 ERA)

Philadelphia scored the first run of the game in the fourth. Odubel Herrera was hit by a Tanner Roark pitch to begin the fram. Two batters later, Ryan Howard singled, moving Herrera to third in the process. Freddy Galvis plated Herrera with an RBI single to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.

In the Nationals half of the fourth, they evened things up at 1-1. Daniel Murphy was hit by a pitch and then scored on an Anthony Rendon RBI-double two hitters later. Washington took the lead in the fifth courtesy of a Bryce Harper RBI-single, making it a 2-1 ball game.

Washington tacked on a couple more in the seventh. Danny Espinosa hit a single and Trea Turner laced a two-run homer to left, extending the Nationals lead to 4-1.

The Phillies tied things up in the eighth, though. Aaron Altherr was hit by a pitch and Andres Blanco drew a base on balls. The runners moved to second and third on a Howard grounder before Cameron Rupp launched a game-tying three-run home run to left center.

Phillies reliever Frank Hermann returned to the mound in the ninth after pitching a scoreless eighth and got two quick outs before Trea Turner launched his second homer of the game to win it for the Nationals in walk-off fashion, 5-4.
