Phillies hold off Marlins as Adam Morgan earns first win since May

Final: Phillies 4, Marlins 3  ❖  Attendance: 16,169

Miami, FL - Behind a strong outing from Adam Morgan, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins, 4-3, on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old lefty won his first decision since May 10, a span of 15 starts without a victory.

Morgan looked strong out of the gates during tonight's game, throwing strikes early and often. Since returning to the rotation on August 14, Morgan has held opposing teams to two runs or fewer in four of five starts. He's struck out five or more in three of those five outings. Meanwhile, the offense provided Morgan with two early runs in the first off the bats of Tommy Joseph and Freddy Galvis. The duo finished with a pair of RBIs each while Odubel Herrera also had a good night at the plate, tallying two hits and scoring three runs. Hector Neris had an uncharacteristically bad eighth inning, allowing two earned runs, courtesy of an Ichiro Suzuki two-run homer. Prior to tonight's game, he had allowed only two earned runs since July 10.

The Phillies and Marlins conclude their series on Wednesday night as Jeremy Hellickson opposes Andrew Cashner at Marlins Park

The Phillies jumped on top early. Cesar Hernandez and Odubel Herrera led off the game with back-to-back singles and Maikel Franco drew a walk to load the bases with none out. Tommy Joseph plated Hernandez with a sacrifice fly to left while Freddy Galvis made it a 2-0 lead with an RBI-single to score Herrera from third later in the inning.

Odubel Herrera hit a triple to start the top of the third inning and scored on a Tommy Joseph double two batters later, extending the lead to 3-0. Herrera was hit by a pitch in the fifth and moved to second on a Joseph single with one down. Freddy Galvis delivered another RBI-single to make it a 4-0 ball game, with Herrera scoring from second.

Miami got their first run in the bottom of the fifth as Adam Morgan started to get himself into some trouble for the first time all night. With one down and runners on first and second, Adeiny Hechavarria slapped an RBI-single to right to bring home J.T. Realmuto, cutting the lead to three.

The Marlins got to the normally lights out Hector Neris in the eighth. Adeiny Hechavarria doubled to lead off the inning. Ichiro Suziki hit a two-run homer, his first career pinch-hit long ball, to bring Miami to within one, 4-3. It was the first earned runs Neris has given up since August 5.

Miami threatened in the ninth against Jeanmar Gomez. Derek Dietrich walked with one down and Adeiny Hechavarria reached on a throwing error by Maikel Franco, putting runners on first and second with just one down. Fortunately, Gomez got Ichiro to fly out to left struck out Dee Gordon looking to end the game.
