If Jeff Francoeur's goal is to play for every team in the National League East before the end of his career, he took another step in that direction Wednesday night.
Prior to the Sept. 1 waiver trade deadline, the Miami Marlins announced that they acquired outfielder Jeff Francoeur from the Atlanta Braves, in a deal that also involved the Texas Rangers.
The 32-year-old Francoeur joins the Marlins, who entered the night as the first team out of the National League Wild Card race. While the 32-year-old won't be able to replace the production that the team has lost with Giancarlo Stanton potentially being out for the season, he now becomes a good veteran depth piece for a team that already had three starting caliber outfielders besides Stanton.
Francoeur spent the 2015 season with the Phillies, batting .258 with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs. The Phillies allowed Francoeur to walk in free-agency, where he signed a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves, whom he played for from 2005 until he was traded to the New York Mets during the 2009 season. Francoeur made the Braves roster out of Spring Training and had hit seven home run and driven in 33 RBIs for the club.
While the former first-round pick has hinted that 2016 may be his final season — even going as far as wearing Peyton Manning's No. 18 months after Manning completed his farewell season, Francoeur is only 32 and presumably could at least be invited to big league camp in 2017 should he choose to play.
