The Phiadelphia Eagles acquired wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham from the Tennessee Titans this morning in exchange for tackle/guard Dennis Kelly.
Green-Beckham has a checkered background stemming from his college days. He was accused of burglary and domestic violence during his time with the Missouri Tigers, which got him kicked off of the football team. Prior to the serious allegations, Green-Beckham was arrested twice on marijuana charges. Following practice today, Howie Roseman spoke about the team’s plan for getting their players who have had troubles on the straight and narrow.
"Today we’ve hired Brian Dawkins full-time to help in this regard," Roseman said. "His title is football operations executive, and he’s going to help in player development. We feel like we’ve got a structure in place where we’re gonna give these guys the best chance to succeed."
"We spent a lot of time the past few weeks doing some background work. He comes in with an opportunity, no promises have been made. We felt comfortable at this time to bring him in here and give him an opportunity to compete."
Roseman knows what it’s like to vault up the organizational ladder like Dawkins has in his short tenure with the Eagles. After having his role severely decreased at the request of former head coach Chip Kelly in early 2015, Roseman was put back in charge of player personnel upon Kelly’s firing this past December. This morning, Roseman was asked if he sat down with Green-Beckham prior to the 2015 draft.
"My process got cut short there, so I never got the opportunity to sit down personally with him,” Roseman said. “Obviously he’s physically gifted. He’s 6’5”, 240 [pounds], he runs a 4.4, he’s got a rare skillset."
During his 2015 draft analysis, NFL analyst Mike Mayock compared "DGB" to Randy Moss, a receiver who himself struggled with off-the-field issues during his football career.
"He’s made mistakes, but he’s a good-hearted kid," Roseman said. "He has the right intentions. He’s not a locker room cancer at all. All positive feedback."
The Titans were reportedly upset with Green-Beckham for showing up to camp out of shape after being asked to work harder in the offseason.
