2016 Training Camp Report: Drops Remain a Problem for Eagles

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

The Eagles offense struggled to find a rhythm in the preseason opener on Thursday and were still plagued by drops, an ongoing epidemic that goes back to last season with no signs of slowing down.

In front of 17,389 fans at Lincoln Financial Field for the team's final open practice, the Eagles showed no signs of improvement when it came to drops.

Between the injuries that continue to pile up — the latest being Carson Wentz, who sat out his first practice on Sunday — the possible suspension for Lane Johnson and the over lack of consistency in making catches, the Eagles have a ton of offensive problems to work out.

With all the drops, it makes nice plays almost a little less appreciated, but there were a couple worth mentioning from Sunday night's practice.

The Eagles used the same first-team offensive line as in Saturday's practice, with Allen Barbre getting work at right tackle and Isaac Seumalo in at left guard.

Jason Peters returned to practice on Sunday, while Jordan Matthews (knee), Mychal Kendricks (hamstring), Jalen Mills (hamstring), Carson Wentz (ribs), Hunter Sharp (hamstring), JaCorey Shepherd (hamstring) and Mike Martin (knee) were all out.

Wentz spoke about his injury for the first time following practice.

"Feeling alright. Ribs are obviously a little sore, but they’ll be alright in due time here," Wentz said. "Just got to give it time. This is the first time I’ve ever had a rib injury. It felt weird, it felt sore, but I didn’t know how to react to it. Contact’s limited here for awhile, for a little bit. The goal is hopefully still in the preseason I’ll be ready to go."

There was also a report that despite having made contact with veteran lineman Will Beatty, nothing is imminent. Beatty is the second among unsigned veteran free agents that the Eagles have shown interest in, joining linebacker Stephen Tulloch, but aside from initial contact with those players, no signings have been close.

It was also Military Appreciation Night at open practice. The team wore special military themed jerseys and did a jersey exchange after practice with military members.

The Eagles are back at practice on Monday morning and offensive coordinator Frank Reich will address the media along with Sam Bradford following practice. The Eagles will wrap up training camp on Tuesday. The Eagles next take the field in game action on Thursday night in Pittsburgh against the Steelers.
