Dario Saric and No. 12 ranked Croatia trailed for the majority of the game against No. 2 Spain in Saturday's Olympic preliminary matchup, but they took the lead with just under a minute and a half to play in the final quarter and held on for the upset, 72-70. Though he only scored five points, it was Dario Saric that saved the game.
Saric hit one of his two shots from the line with 12 seconds to go, putting Croatia's lead at 72-70. Spain took the ball up the court, but couldn't find an open shot and time ticked down with the ball headed out of bounds off of a Croatian player with 1.8 seconds remaining. Spain in bounded the ball to Pau Gasol with a chance to tie the game at the rim, but Dario Saric came up with an enormous block as time expired to cap off the upset.

Croatia trailed by as many as 14 at one point, but slowly chipped away at the lead, outscoring Spain by eight in the second half. Saric finished with five points on 1-for-7 shooting from the field. He added seven rebounds, five assists and a block. His shooting will need to improve if he plans to be effective consistently in the NBA, but his all around game provides a whole lot of potential.
Meanwhile, for Spain, Sixers point guard Sergio Rodriguez had a game-high seven assists to go along with 10 points on 3-for-11 shooting and 2-for-7 from beyond the arc. Philadelphia signed him because of his ability to make smart passes and see the floor well, and he showed that off in the game against Croatia.
Spain's hopes at winning gold took a big hit with the loss after coming away with silver medals in the last two Summer Olympics. They'll play Brazil on Tuesday at 1:15 p.m.
Dario Saric and Croatia will look to go 2-0 when they match up against Argentina at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.
