Phillies outslug Giants in offensive onslaught

Final: Phillies 13, Giants 8  ❖  Attendance: 23,351

Philadelphia, PA -  The Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants combined to hit six homers and score 21 runs, but it was the Phils that emerged victorious by a score of 13-8 after watching a 6-0 lead fall by the wayside tonight at Citizens Bank Park.

Thanks to home runs from Aaron Altherr and Maikel Franco, the Phillies jumped out to a 6-0 advantage after two innings over Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. Unfortunately, Zach Eflin couldn't hold that lead, allowing a run to score in the fourth and five to cross the plate in the sixth. With the game tied at eight in the eighth, Aaron Altherr hit a two-run single and Cameron Rupp mashed a three-run homer to give Philadelphia a five-run advantage, one they would not lose.

The Phils offense came alive tonight, especially the top of the order. Cesar Hernandez, Aaron Altherr and Maikel Franco combined to go 11-for-14 with two doubles, two homers, nine RBI and nine runs scored. Hernandez and Franco each had four-hit games while Altherr drove in five runs. With the exception of Luis Garcia, the bullpen was strong as well. Edubray Ramos, Hector Neris and Jeanmar Gomez pitched the final three innings, scattering three hits while striking out four.

The Phillies and Giants continue their series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Aaron Nola will look to rebound from a string of subpar starts against 13-game winner Johnny Cueto.

The Phillies jumped on Bumgarner early. Cesar Hernandez hit a lead-off single and Aaron Altherr followed with a two-run home run to the opposite field to give Philadelphia an early 2-0 lead in the first.

In the second, with two outs and runners on first and second, Altherr laced an RBI-single to left field to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Maikel Franco cleared the bases in the next at-bat with a three-run homer to left field, extending the Phillies lead to 6-0. It was Franco's 20th homer, making him the first Phillies third baseman to hit 20 home runs in a season since Scott Rolen in 2001.

San Francisco got on the board in the fourth courtesy of a Brandon Crawford lead-off home run. They tied things in the fifth. With two down and the strike zone as tight as ever for Eflin, Crawford hit a two-run single to cut the Phils lead in half, 6-3. Brandon Belt followed with a three-run homer to right, tying the game at 6-6.

Tommy Joseph got the Phillies back in front in the bottom half of the fifth. Maikel Franco doubled to lead the inning off and moved to third on a Cameron Rupp ground out. Joseph ripped a single to center, plating Franco to put the Phillies on top, 7-6.

The Giants took the lead back in the top of the sixth. With two outs and a runner on first, Angel Pagan belted a two-run homer to right, giving San Fran an 8-7 advantage. It could have been avoided if Luis Garcia had not walked the pitcher to start the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Featherston walked to lead things off before both Cesar Hernandez and Aaron Altherr struck out. Maikel Franco drove in Featherston with an RBI-single, tying the game at 8-8.

With one man down in the bottom of the eighth, Odubel Herrera hit a pinch-hit single. Cesar Hernandez followed with a double to right, putting runners on second and third. Aaron Altherr put the Phils ahead, 10-8, with a two-run single, plating Herrera and Hernandez. Maikel Franco walked and then Cameron Rupp blasted a three-run homer to right, putting the Phillies lead at five, 13-8.

Jeanmar Gomez came in to get the final three outs and seal the Phillies second win in a Madison Bumgarner start this season.
