The trade market for two Philadelphia Phillies arms appears to be heating up.
Various reports have indicated that the Miami Marlins are interested in starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, who will pitch against them tonight.
In addition to that report, the market for closer Jeanmar Gomez, which appeared non-existent just a few days ago, also appears to be developing. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported this morning that the San Francisco Giants 'have a top scout' watching the Phillies take on the Marlins this week, apparently watching David Hernandez and Gomez specifically.
During today's broadcast of the New York Mets' matchup with the Chicago Cubs on ESPN, Crasnick's colleague Jim Bowden noted that the Texas Rangers have been the most aggressive team on the trade market, and listed over five trade targets that the team has discussed with potential sellers. Among the names mentioned, Bowden said that Rangers' general manager Jon Daniels and the Phillies 'have talked' about both Hellickson and Gomez.
The Rangers entered the day four games ahead of the Houston Astros in the American League West, and tied with the Cleveland Indians for the most wins in the American League. They do need to add a back end of the rotation arm, as former Phillies starter Kyle Lohse is currently sporting a 12.54 ERA as the team's No. 5 starter. As for their bullpen, Sam Dyson is fairly locked in as the team's closer, but Gomez could make sense as a set-up man to pair with Tony Barnette, especially considering that former Phillie Jake Diekman is currently on the disabled list.
Hellickson, 29, can become a free-agent at the end of the season. Gomez, who is 28 and having a career year as a closer, is under team control for 2017, so the Phillies have less incentive to move Gomez if they don't feel as though they would clearly win the trade. The MLB's non-waiver trade deadline is August 1.
