With Summer League action concluded for the Philadelphia 76ers, we don't get to see much organized basketball revolving around the team until preseason begins. Two Sixers players though, Jerami Grant and Jahlil Okafor, get to spend some time with the U.S. Men's Basketball Olympic Team as members of the Olympic Select Team. Okafor is limited to non-contact drills, but Grant got his first taste of practice on Monday against some of the best in the nation.
“I think it was good,” Grant told Brian Seltzer of Sixers.com after Monday's practice session. “Just being out here, getting to see what the older players are doing, I think it’ll definitely help me in the future, and help everybody here in the future.”
Last season with Philadelphia, Grant averaged 9.7 points and 4.7 rebounds. He ranked 11th in the NBA with 127 blocks.
Meanwhile, Jahlil Okafor has to watch the scrimmages from the sideline, but is using the experience as an educational one. During his time with the Olympic team, Okafor will get to see successful NBA big men DeMarcus Cousins and DeAndre Jordan in action up close. Those are two players that the former Duke product can learn a lot from in the long run.
“DeAndre’s obviously amazing defensively,” Okafor told Seltzer. “He’s done a great job with his body. And Boogie [Cousins], he’s just an all around great player, so I’ll be watching those two guys a lot.”
The second-year center was the first Sixers rookie in franchise history to average at least 17 points and seven rebounds per game.
