Final: Phillies 4, Mets 2
PHILADELPHIA — Jerad Eickhoff and Logan Verrett had about as similar of outings as they could, both pitching well through six innings and allowing two runs a piece. Ryan Howard got the scoring started early with a solo blast in the 2nd inning for career home run 370 which ties him with Gil Hodges for 77th on the all time list.
A pair of sacrifice flies from Jose Reyes in the 3rd and Travis D'Arnaud in the 4th put the Mets up 2-1, but Eickhoff was able to prevent further damage. Cody Asche would tie the game on a ground out RBI in the fifth. After Eickhoff allowed two base runners in the seventh, Edubray Ramos would get them out of the jam and Maikel Franco would drive in the go ahead run in the bottom of the inning.
Carlos Ruiz would hit a lead off double in the 8th and score on a wild pitch for a late insurance run. Hector Neris and Jeanmar Gomez returned in their familiar, late-inning roles. Gomez finished things off with his 25th save of the season.
The rubber match comes Sunday afternoon and has Zach Eflin (2-2, 4.08 ERA), who is coming off two winning performances, against Jacob deGrom (5-4, 2.61 ERA).
