On Monday, night Philadelphia 76ers fans got to see what Ben Simmons offers to a team. Sure, his shot needs some work, but all in all, the 6-foot-10 point forward out of LSU displayed his tremendous court vision, his passing skills to get the team involved and the ability to get to the free throw line, something the Sixers placed dead last in during the 2015-16 season.
Simmons' debut ended early thanks to calf cramps in both of his legs. After the game, the No.1 overall pick said it was due in large part to the fact that he hasn't played organized basketball since March with LSU.
"It's been about four months since I played,” Simmons told CSNPhilly.com. “That's the main reason. I haven't played in a while."
The Sixers will keep Simmons out of the lineup on Tuesday night against the Spurs, but coach Billy Lange said that Monday night's cramps weren't the only things that factored into the decision.
“We might have been able to put him back in but, on July 4th, we didn't need to create those fireworks,” Lange said, noting that the team has a long summer league schedule still ahead. “We said [on Sunday] that we were going to take it smart from here on out. He will not play tomorrow. We were going to space out the minutes to begin with, so this has nothing to do with tonight.”
Simmons finished with 10 points on 2-for-9 shooting, hitting all six shots from the free throw line. He added five assists and eight rebounds. No.24 overall pick Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot had 13 points, showing nice range from beyond the arc on multiple occasions.
