Phillies finish homestand 0-6 with loss to D’Backs

Final: Diamondbacks 3, Phillies 1  ❖

PHILADELPHIA, PA — It was a rough start to say the least. Double. Single. Home run. Double. Through the first four Diamondbacks hitters, Jeremy Hellickson had allowed three extra-base hits and three runs to score, all before an out was recorded. From that point forward though, Hellickson actually pitched remarkably well, allowing just two more hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Arizona didn't really so much as threaten again.

After the first inning, the story was one that was far to familiar to Phillies fans lately. To no one's surprise, Hellickson received next to no help from the offense. The Phillies did manage to score a single run in the second inning. The next time the offense threatened was the seventh. Following a streak of fourteen consecutive batters retired by Shelby Miller, Cameron Rupp finally broke through with a bloop hit into shallow left field. Tyler Goeddel followed with a hard hit ball past Jake Lamb at third base. With two runners on and two outs, Jimmy Paredes flew out to centerfield in a pinch-hit appearance to end the inning and the threat.

The Phillies showed some life again in the bottom of the ninth. Odubel Herrera led off the inning by beating Brad Ziegler to the first base bag with a head first dive. Andres Blanco then reached on a fielding error by Nick Ahmed. Unfortunately, Tommy Joseph followed with a double play and Rupp struck out.

Against a starting pitcher who entered the game with an ERA over 7.00, the Phillies scratched just one run across the plate. It's the seventh straight loss for the Phils. They finished 0-6 on their six-game home stand.

Jean Segura led off the game with a double into left on an 0-2 count and just two pitches later, Phil Gosselin singled up the middle to score Segura. Jake Lamb then homered deep to right to give the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead after just three batters. After Rickie Weeks doubled, the first four Arizona hitters had reached base, including three extra-base hits. Jeremy Hellickson was able to retire the next three hitters to keep the Arizona lead at three headed into the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the second inning, Andres Blanco started things off with a double. He was able to advance to this on a groundball by Cameron Rupp. Then, with two outs, Tyler Goeddel doubled to centerfield to score Blanco, but was unable to score himself. The Phillies, though, did cut the deficit to two and trailed 3-1.
