Final: Cubs 6, Phillies 4 ❖  Attendance: 22,162

Philadelphia, PA – The Phillies scored four runs in the ninth after Jon Lester left the game, but they couldn't complete the comeback, dropping the first game of a three-game set with the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park by a score of 6-4. Lester was brilliant, striking out nine over eight shutout innings. The Phillies are now 0-8 this season on Monday nights.

Despite a 30-pitch first inning, Phillies starter Adam Morgan held his own against the best team in baseball. Over six frames, he allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out five. Morgan didn't walk a batter and exited with 98 pitches. The Phillies broke into the run column in the ninth, with a three-run homer from Freddy Galvis and a solo blast from Tommy Joseph.

Chicago's offense got three-hit games from Dexter Fowler, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. Jayson Heyward hit a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game in the fourth.

On Tuesday evening for game two of the series, Jerad Eickhoff will get the ball for the Phillies. He'll be opposed by Kyle Hendricks of the Cubs.

Adam Morgan surrendered a lead-off double to Dexter Fowler in the first. Two hitters later, Kris Bryant hit an RBI-double to plate Fowler and make it 1-0. Bryant's hit was originally a triple, but fan interference made it a double with the run still scoring. Anthony Rizzo reached base on a fly ball to shallow left just out of the reach of Freddy Galvis. Jorge Soler followed with a hard line drive grounder to Galvis, who knocked it down but couldn't complete the transfer. With the bases jammed and one down, Morgan bounced back and struck out Javier Baez and Addison Russell to end the inning and limit the damage at just one run.

In the fourth, Chicago added on a pair of runs. Jon Lester hit a one-out double. After a strikeout of Dexter Fowler, Jason Heyward hit a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 game.

Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI-single in the seventh, extending the Cubs lead to 4-0. Matt Szczur drove in a run with a squeeze bunt with one down to make it 5-0. Rizzo added on another RBI-single in the ninth, scoring Bryant from second.

The Phillies finally broke through in the ninth. With Lester out of the game, Andres Blanco and Cesar Hernandez singled to lead things off. Freddy Galvis followed with a three-run homer, cutting the lead in half, 6-3. Tommy Joseph made it a 6-4 game with a solo homer, going back-to-back with Galvis. Maikel Franco grounded out and Cameron Rupp struck out before Odubel Herrera kept the inning going with a pinch-hit single. Ryan Howard came in to pinch-hit, but grounded out on the first pitch to end the game.
