Phillies ex-prospects haunt team in loss to Brewers

Final: Milwaukee Brewers 6, Philadelphia Phillies 3  ❖  Attendance: 22,890.

Philadelphia, PA — The Phillies headed into game three of a four-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers with the series tied at one game each.  Despite some early offensive action from the Phillies, the Brewers offense kept going and the Brewers took game three.  Two former Phillies prospects led the charge against their original organization.

Jonathan Villar and Domingo Santana both went to the Houston Astros in 2010 and 2011, respectively.  Villar went in the trade that brought pitcher Roy Oswalt to the Phillies in 2010.   Santana was the "player to be named" in the Hunter Pence trade of 2011.   Both of them homered en route to a Brewers victory.

WP: Will Smith (1-0, 0.00 ERA)  ❖  LP: Hector Neris (1-3, 2.05 ERA)  ❖  SV: Jeremy Jeffress (15)

The Brewers got to work on their offense immediately.  Jonathan Villar led off the game with a home run against Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson.   Hellickson did not have his best command, and struggled to complete five innings, allowing three earned runs.  While the Phillies responded in the second inning with three runs, courtesy of home runs by Tommy Joseph and Cesar Hernandez, that would be all the Phillies would score.

In the top of the fourth, the former Phillie Villar would drive in another run, to make the score 3-2.  In the fifth inning, a sacrifice fly by Chris Carter would be what brought in the tying run for the Brewers, to even the score at 3.   The game would remain tied until the eighth inning.

Reliever Hector Neris entered the eighth inning hoping to keep the game tied for the Phillies to score in the bottom of the inning.  However, Neris gave up a home run to lead off hitter Domingo Santana, the other former Phillies prospect that would continue to haunt the Phillies.   Neris quickly retired three batters after the Santana home run, but the Brewers were not done scoring.

In the ninth inning, the Brewers got to Phillies reliever Andrew Bailey for two more runs.  Scooter Gennett would hit a single that plated both Aaron Hill and Jonathan Lucroy and the Brewers took a 6-3 lead.   That would be all the scoring in the game as the Phillies failed to score in the bottom of the ninth inning.
