Phillies snap losing streak, defeat Brewers as Gomez regains saves lead

Final: Philadelphia Phillies 6, Milwaukee Brewers 3  ❖  Attendance: 20,138.

Philadelphia, PA — The Phillies celebrated the 1976 season by donning some retro uniforms reminiscent of 40 years ago.  The Phillies bats woke back up and scored six runs – the most the Phillies have scored since May 12 against the Atlanta Braves when they defeated the Braves 7-4.   Cameron Rupp and Andres Blanco homered to lead the Phillies to a 6-3 victory.

Vince Velasquez had the ball for the Phillies but struggled with his command in the fifth inning.  Andrew Bailey would relieve Velasquez with the bases loaded and helped end the Brewers threat without coughing up most of the lead.  Bailey earned his third win of the season.

WP: Andrew Bailey (3-06, 2.30 ERA)  ❖  LP: Jimmy Nelson (5-4, 3.43 ERA)  ❖  SV: Jeanmar Gomez (18)

The Phillies and Brewers had a quiet two innings before the Phillies got things going in the bottom of the third inning.   Catcher Cameron Rupp would get things goign with a solo home run to put the Phillies up 1-0.  Odubel Herrera walked and advanced to second base on a groundout by Andres Blanco.   Maikel Franco followed with a single to left, which scored Herrera and put the Phillies up 2-0.    Tommy Joseph followed with a singel of his own, and he was followed by Jimmy Paredes, who singled to center, scoring Franco to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead.

The following inning the Phillies would get three more. Rupp doubled and Herrera walked, giving the Phillies two base runners with two outs.   Blanco would take advantage of the two runners on and homer to right field, putting the Phillies up 6-0.

The Brewers would begin to make some offensive noise the following inning.  Phillies starter Vince Velasquez began to unwind.  Aaron Hill led off with a single, and was followed by a double off the bat of former Phillies prospect Domingo Santana.   Velasquez then walked Alex Presley to load the bases.   Another former Phillies prospect, Jonathan Villar would hit a sacrifice fly that scored Hill and give the Brewers their first run.

After walking Scooter Gennett to load the bases once again, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin went to the bullpen.  Andrew Bailey took the mound with just one out and the bases loaded and got them out of trouble.  Ryan Braun would ground out to second base, scoring a second run for the Brewers, but record the second out.  Bailey got Jonathan Lucroy to fly out to end the threat and the inning's scoring.

The Brewers would get one more in the seventh inning as Villar would homer off of David Hernandez, hitting the left field foul pole.   That would bring the score to where it would end: 6-3 Phillies.

Hector Neris walked two but pitched a clean eighth inning, and Jeanmar Gomez retired the Brewers quickly to close out the game and record his league-leading 18th save.
