Over the weekend, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports noted that prior to a season-ending torn hamstring, Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Charlie Morton was starting to draw trade interest from teams potentially looking to add a back-end of the rotation starter later in the summer.
While Morton's chances of being traded ended with his May 2 season-ending surgery, Rosenthal noted in his most recent Full Count video that another Phillies veteran starting pitcher is expected to draw trade interest.
''Jeremy Hellickson would be the next logical candidate to move, and the Phils surely will jump if they get the right offer.''
It's difficult to project exactly what 'the right offer' would be, though given that Hellickson currently has a 3.99 ERA and will be a free-agent at the end of the season, a package that includes a lower level prospect that's raw but has high upside, potentially a reliever, would seem to make sense.
Rosenthal did also note that the Phillies won't necessarily force a trade for Hellickson, especially when you consider that three of their current starting pitchers — Aaron Nola, Vince Velasquez and Jerad Eickhoff — may be on innings limits in the last month of the season.
As Rosenthal would go onto say, the Phillies do have other potential minor league options that could eat innings later in the season, players such as Alec Ascher, Jake Thompson and Zach Eflin, but that the Phillies don't want to rush any of those players into big league action before they are ready. It should also be pointed out that with top prospects like Thompson and Eflin, the Phillies will probably take their total innings into account as well, and simply because those players haven't been pitching in the majors doesn't mean they haven't been racking up innings as well in 2016.
