Three-run 3rd inning propels Phillies to series win

Philadelphia, PA — After the Miami Marlins (21-19) scored two runs in the first inning, things weren't looking good for starter Jeremy Hellickson and the Philadelphia Phillies (24-17). However, the Phillies batted around in the third inning and scored three runs to take the lead. They added another run in the eighth thanks to Tyler Goeddel's first major league home-run. His recent hot streak has helped boost the often underachieving Phillies offense.

Four runs proved to be enough to secure the victory, as the Marlins were kept off balance the rest of the game. The bullpen was once again spectacular, with David Hernandez, Hector Neris and Jeanmar Gomez all throwing scoreless innings. Gomez picked up his league-leading sixteenth save of the season.

The Marlins got off to a hot start with Derek Dietrich leading off the game with a walk. After J.T. Realmuto popped out to first baseman Ryan Howard, Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich hit a triple into the left-center field gap to score Dietrich from first base. One out later, Marcell Ozuna hit a double down the left field line to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead. Jeremy Hellickson was able to get the last out of the inning and avoid any more damage.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Maikel Franco was called out on an infield hit. However, he appeared safe to the Phillies first base coach. The umpires reviewed the call and it was overturned, giving Franco a single. After a strikeout by Cameron Rupp, Tyler Goeddel hit a single to center field to put runners on first and second. Hellickson worked out a walk after an eight pitch at-bat to load the bases for Peter Bourjos. However, the Phillies were unable to capitalize, as Bourjos flew out to deep left field.

David Lough reached base on an error by Marlins first baseman Justin Bour to lead off the bottom of the third. Second baseman Cesar Hernandez followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second for Andres Blanco. Blanco hit a ball sharply down the right field line for a double, scoring Lough from first. This put runners on second and third. One out later, the Marlins decided to intentionally walk Franco to load the bases and face Rupp instead. He promptly responded by smacking a single up the middle on the first pitch of his at-bat, with two runs scoring to give the Phillies the lead. Goeddel followed with a single to load the bases once again. Hellickson struck out for the second out of the inning, bringing Bourjos to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs for the second time in the game. Unfortunately, Bourjos was unable to get a clutch hit, as he lined out to left field.

The offense was quiet for both teams until the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Goeddel blasted his first major league home-run into the left-center seats to extend the Phillies' lead. This is the second time in two days that a Phillies rookie has hit his first major league homer, with the other being Tommy Joseph during yesterday's game.
