While Philadelphia 76ers fans celebrate the team winning the No. 1 pick in June's NBA Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies, who own the first overall selection in June 9th's MLB Draft, apparently are closer to deciding who they will select with their pick.
When speaking on a variety of topics this past weekend, Phillies general manager Matt Klentak told a group of reporters, including Jordan Hall of Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, that the team has "narrowed their focus" as it pertains to who will be selected with the No. 1 pick.
We’re going to have meetings this coming week with all of our area scouts flying in to present their territory. Then we’ll break again, go get some more looks at some of the players, then we’ll come together again in 10 days or so leading up to the draft. As far as the first pick is concerned, we’ve started to narrow our focus a little bit down to a more manageable number of players. But still have almost a month to go and plan to use every bit of it before we make our final decision.
Klentak's quote is interesting on a few levels.
The first level is that while he suggests that the team has begun to rule out selecting certain players, the public's consensus on who the team will actually select appears to have become more cloudy. What once seemed likely to be a decision between Florida left-handed starter A.J. Puk and Barnegat High School (N.J.) left-handed starter Jason Groome, now seems to have at least expanded to include Mercer outfielder Kyle Lewis.
Beyond that, who will be taken with the No. 1 pick almost seemed to be an afterthought to Klentak, which reminds the public that the Phillies do have a 40-round draft to prepare for, one in which they will generally make high selections in each round. Jimmy Rollins was a second round pick, while Ryan Howard was a fifth round pick, so it is important to remember that the No. 1 pick isn't the only pick in this draft that the Phillies ultimately hope will pay dividends for them.
