Phillies tie series with victory over Marlins thanks to Velasquez, Joseph

Philadelphia, PA — After losing the first game of the series versus the Miami Marlins (21-18), the Philadelphia Phillies (23-17) came through with just enough offense and solid pitching to pull out a win. Vince Velasquez threw five excellent innings, striking out ten batters. He would have continued further in the game if it weren't for his high pitch count. The bullpen had to come in the game earlier than expected, but they mowed down the Marlins' offense. Overall, Phillies pitchers, including starter Velasquez, combined to strike out seventeen batters tonight. This was one strike-out short of the franchise record for team strike-outs in a nine inning game.

On the offensive front, Tommy Joseph had a fantastic night, going 3-4 and hitting his first major league home run. The team capitalized on a few opportunities they had and it proved to be enough to secure the victory.

The Marlins came out swinging in the first inning, with Derek Dietrich leading off the game with a single to left field and Martin Prado following with a double down the left field line. Christian Yelich hit a hard ground ball to shortstop Freddy Galvis, and the Phillies were expecting to allow the run to score to get the runner out at first. However, Dietrich decided not to go home on the play. Phillies starter Vince Velasquez struck out Marlins clean-up hitter Giancarlo Stanton for the second out of the inning and retired Justin Bour on a pop out to get out of the jam unscathed.

In the bottom of the second, recent Phillies call-up Tommy Joseph lead off the inning with his first major league home-run. The shot to left field hit the netting attached to the foul pole. Unfortunately, the Phillies weren't able to add on any more runs in the inning.

With two outs in the top of the third, Yelich hit a ball to left-center field that center fielder Odubel Herrera was unable to catch. Yelich ended up at third base on the play. Stanton followed with a walk to put runners on first and third. Fortunately, Velasquez was able to strike out Bour for the final out.

Freddy Galvis led off the bottom of the fifth with a double. Tyler Goeddel followed with a ground out that kept Galvis from moving up to third. Pinch-hitter Emmanuel Burriss struck out, but the third strike was dropped. Galvis was able to go to third on the play, which was called a fielder's choice, due to Burriss being thrown out at first. Peter Bourjos hit a single to give the Phils another run before Herrera grounded out to end the inning.

Cesar Hernandez singled to start off the bottom of the sixth. After an out by Maikel Franco, Joseph came to the plate. He singled for his third hit of the day. A fielding error by Marlins center fielder Marcell Ozuna allowed Hernandez to score and Joseph to advance to third on the play. However, Joseph was stranded at third and the Phillies weren't able to capitalize on the runner ninety feet away from scoring.

The Marlins threatened to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the ninth. After Ozuna struck out for the first out of the inning, Adeiny Hechavarria singled to left field. Pinch-hitter J.T. Realmuto followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Another pinch-hitter, Chris Johnson, came to the plate and walked to load the bases. Dietrich hit a fly ball to center field for the second out of the inning, but a run scored on the sacrifice fly. The final out of the game was a fantastic stop by Joseph, who flipped the ball to closer Jeanmar Gomez at first base.
