Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman initially reported late Wednesday that Giroux would be going under the knife, after a playoff campaign that saw him record just one point in six games. He had been looking hurt throughout the entirety of the playoffs.
Both players are expected to recover in time for September's World Cup of Hockey, assuming their respective teams add them to their final rosters. Team Canada and the Team North America young guns are expected to finalize their rosters on May 27.
Hextall did not offer any further injury updates, though he may do so soon — especially considering that other Flyers, including Jakub Voracek, appeared to be injured as well. Additionally, Michael Del Zotto continued rehab for his wrist injury this week.
Surgery will also add to an already-busy offseason for Gostisbehere. He will be traveling to Las Vegas on June 22 for the NHL Awards, as a finalist for this year's Calder Trophy.
From the team's official release:
"Claude Giroux and Shayne Gostisbehere are both scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday, May 17th to have their right hips repaired as well as bilateral lower abdominal tears repaired.
Their hip surgery will be performed by Dr. Eric Kropf and their abdominal surgery will be performed by Dr. William Meyers.
We expect both players to be able to return to full activity in 10-12 weeks."
