SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Philadelphia Phillies were among the 20-plus teams with representatives in attendance at right-hander Tim Lincecum's showcase — in which he threw 41 pitches — at Scottsdale Stadium on Friday, according to Matt Gelb.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner and four-time All-Star has yet to sign with a club for the 2016 season after spending a decade within the San Francisco Giants' organization.
Teams that have also been rumored to show interest in the right-hander, other than his former club, include: the Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks, Miami Marlins, Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres, Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox.
Lincecum was limited to just 15 starts last season due to injury. He underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip on September 3.
The Phillies and Lincecum are not quite a mutual fit. The Bellevue, Washington, native has said he wants to assume a starter position and hopes to pitch "a good five or six more years." The Phillies, meanwhile, currently have a young rotation which features Vince Velasquez, Adam Morgan, Jerad Eickhoff and Aaron Nola. Right-hander Jake Thompson, acquired in the Cole Hamels trade with the Texas Rangers last July, is also in the future plans.
It appears Lincecum's only role on the 2016 Phillies, barring injury, would be limited to the bullpen. It's likely the Phillies were just doing their due diligence in attending the showcase.
Lincecum turns 32 years of age on June 15. In nine seasons, he is 108-83 with 10 complete games, seven shutouts and 1,704 strikeouts over 1,643 2/3 innings.
