Final: Phillies 3, Padres 0 ❖  Attendance: 21,043

Philadelphia, PA – Looking to rebound after a rough outing against the Reds last week, Charlie Morton brought his best stuff tonight, leading the Phillies (3-5) to a shuout win over the Padres (3-5). Morton allowed six runs in 3.2 innings in his first start of the season in Cincinnati, but came back tonight to toss 6.2 shutout innings with seven strikeouts.

The Phillies went hitless for nearly five innings tonight and didn't produce much of any offense beyond an RBI-triple off the bat of Odubel Herrera in the 6th. The pitching staff held San Diego hitters at bay with Hector Neris, David Hernandez and Jeanmar Gomez pitching the final 2.1 innings allowing just one hit and a walk. The Phillies bullpen hasn't allowed a run in their last 10.2 innings after surrendering 15 earned runs in 10.1 innings during the first four games of the season

Philadelphia and San Diego continue their series on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park. Jerad Eickhoff gets the ball for the Phils and will be opposed by Colin Rea,

WP: Charlie Morton (1-1, 5.23 ERA)  ❖  LP: Robbie Erlin (1-1, 0.93 ERA) ❖ SV: Jeanmar Gomez (3)

Although the Phillies went without a hit through the first 4.2 innings, they got on the board first in the 6th. Tyler Goeddel broke through with his first big league hit, a single, to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Charlie Morton was unable to get a bunt down and struck out. Cesar Hernandez struck out as well, but Odubel Herrera hit a two-out RBI-triple to plate Goeddel and give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.

After taking the lead in the top of the 6th, Charlie Morton looked to have a shutdown inning in the top of the 7th. Melvin Upton Jr. singled to lead off the inning before Morton struck out Derek Norris. During Alexei Ramirez's at-bat, Carlos Ruiz gunned down Upton, who was attempting to steal second. Ramirez walked and then Morton walked Alexi Amarista, which would end his evening. Hector Neris came in and struck out Wil Myers to end the inning and strand two runners, keeping up the recent string strong outings for the Phillies bullpen.

In the 8th, both Cedric Hunter and Emmanuel Burriss drew walks. Cesar Hernendez attempted to bunt, but went after a pitch high in the zone and popped out to third. After a Padres pitching change, Odubel Herrera also walked, loading the bases with just one out for Maikel Franco. The Phillies slugging third baseman grounded into what looked like an inning-ending double play, but the throw from second went wide and Brett Wallace couldn't handle it at first, allowing two runs to score, extending the Phillies lead to 3-0.

Jeanmar Gomez got the ball in the 9th and allowed a hit before locking down his third save of the season.
