The Phillies take on the Blue Jays today at 1:05pm, but the team made a variety of cuts this morning, including Adam Morgan, who was a strong candidate for the teams' fifth starter role. With him heading to Triple-A, Vince Velasquez, today's starter for the Phils, will start the season as the teams' fifth starter. The team also sent numerous players back to minor league camp while also optioning Elvis Araujo, Luis Garcia and Darnell Sweeney to Triple-A. In total, the Phils sent nine players to the minors today.
Heading to Lehigh Valley is former fifth starter candidate Adam Morgan along with relievers Elvis Araujo and Luis Garcia. Darnell Sweeney, who was a bench option for the club, was also optioned to Triple-A.
Adam Morgan looked strong all spring long, posting a 2-0 record to go along with an ERA of 2.00 in three starts, but the Phillies opted for the power arm of Vince Velasquez in their rotation. He'll be a lock for the Ironpigs rotation after posting a 5-7 record and a 4.48 ERA with the Phillies last season.
Araujo appeared in six games this spring, pitched 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on four hits while walking three and striking out three. Araujo appeared in 40 games for the Phillies last season, going 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA.
Meanwhile, Garcia appeared in seven games a hurled 7.2 innings, surrendering a combined five runs on 11 hits while walking four and striking out 11. Garcia pitched in 72 games for the Phils in 2015, posting a 4-6 record to go along with a 3.51 ERA.
Also heading to Triple-A is IF/OF Darnell Sweeney. Sweeney brought a lot to the table this spring, with the ability to play all over the field, but his inability to hit was the deal breaker. In 18 games, he hit just .212 with three RBI's and 13 strikeouts.
Infielder Angelys Nina and catcher Logan Moore will head to minor league camp along with relievers Reinier Roibal, Chris Leroux and Bobby LaFromboise. Nina, Roibal and Leroux were never really in the mix to make the team out of camp, but Bobby LaFromboise looked strong during the preseason, so his demotion may come as a surprise to some. In 8.1 innings, spanning seven games, LaFromboise posted a 1.08 ERA while striking out nine and holding opposing hitters to a .074 average.
Roibal appeared in five games and pitched seven innings this spring, posting a 1.29 ERA with six strikeouts. He went 11-6 with a 2.92 ERA last season between Clearwater and Reading.
Leroux spent the majority of 2015 in Triple-A Lehigh Valley, going 3-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 60.2 innings. He pitched in five spring games for the Phils and allowed six runs in six innings.
Nina, 27, was with the Rockies Triple-A team last season and hit .300 with 21 doubles, five triples, four homers and 50 RBI's. He went 5-for-12 at the plate in Spring Training with two doubles and an RBI.
With these moves, the Phillies now have 38 remaining players on the spring major league roster. They have 20 pitchers, three catchers, eight infielders and seven outfielders. That will need to go down to 25 over the next week.
