Aiming to nab fifth starter spot, Adam Morgan gets the nod against Atlanta

By: Brandon Apter, contributor

The Philadelphia Phillies (14-7) offense could only muster one run against the Astros yesterday and will look to rebound tonight in Orlando with a matchup against the Atlanta Braves (6-16) at Champion Stadium.

During yesterday's loss, Cedric Hunter provided the lone RBI while Charlie Morton, who is slated to begin the season as the teams' third starter, tossed 5.1 innings and allowed two unearned runs while striking out five and walking two. It took him over 90 pitches to get through his outing.

This evening in Orlando, Adam Morgan will look to continue his strong spring performance against young, talented Braves right-hander Matt Wisler.

Starting Pitching Matchup:

Philadelphia Phillies (14-7) Atlanta Braves (6-16)
LHP Adam Morgan RHP Matt Wisler
(2-0, 2.00 ERA) (0-0, 3.12 ERA)

Morgan is locked in a battle for the Phillies fifth starter spot in the rotation with Vince Velasquez. The Phillies could potentially go with a six-man rotation, but it looks as if they will opt not to, so it will be either Morgan or Velasquez to start the season. The other one will likely start the year in Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Though Adam Morgan won't blow you away with his fastball, its his command that turns heads. His ability to spot his fastball and breaking pitches is what he prides himself on and its been working well for him this spring. In his last start against the Yankees, Morgan tossed four one-hit innings and struck out two. Last season, in 15 starts, Morgan posted a 5-7 record to go along with a 4.81 ERA

Heading to the mound for Atlanta is second-year starter Matt Wisler. After going 8-8 with a 4.71 in 19 starts for the Braves last season, Wisler has a 3.12 ERA through 8.2 innings this spring, spanning three games. He faced the Phillies once last season and lasted just 4.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs at the beginning of August. Wisler came over to the Braves in the trade that sent Craig Kimbrel and B.J. Upton to the Padres back in April of last year.
