Phillies down Pirates with huge offensive day from Ryan Howard, Maikel Franco

Final: Phillies 15, Pirates 12  ❖

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Friday's game looked like it was going to be a blowout in favor of the Pittsburgh Pirates.   After the Pirates got off to a five-run lead, the Phillies exploded for 15 runs over two innings as the Phillies bats came alive.

The Phillies offense got strong contributions from Ryan Howard, who hit a grand slam home run and drove in five runs, Maikel Franco, who hit a three-run home run, and Cameron Rupp, who hit a home run himself.   Outfielder Peter Bourjos had a home run of his own as the Phillies amassed 15 runs total.

The Phillies will try to keep their bats hot once again on Saturday at 1:07pm against the Blue Jays in Dunedin

The Pirates took a quick 5-0 lead against their former pitcher Charlie Morton by the end of the third inning.  However, Morton hung around for four innings and would have hung on for more, had the Phillies offense not erupted in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The long half-inning ended Morton's day and Morton headed to the bullpen to finish out his allocated pitches for the day.

Pirates starter Kyle Lobstein went three innings and did not allow a run.  Lobstein departed the game after the third inning with a 5-0 lead and the bullpen behind him let Lobstein and the Pirates down.  After Lobstein departed, things got ugly for the Pirates bullpen.

Wilfredo Boscan got just one out, allowing eight earned runs in the process.  After Boscan exited, the Pirates got little relief.  Guido Knudson allowed two of Boscan's runners to score along with one more of his own runs before getting the third out of a 26-minute, 14-batter bottom of the fourth inning for the Phillies.

The following inning, Pirates reliever Trey Haley had his own issues.  Getting just two outs, Haley was charged for six earned runs.   The Pirates bullpen settled down after that, ending the Phillies offensive output.

The Phillies bullpen helped make things interesting.  Relievers Jimmy Cordero, Severino Gonzalez, and Dalier Hinojosa all surrendered Pirates runs to bring home 7 more runs.  The Pirates scored 12 total, but it was not enough.
