Former Phillie Marlon Byrd ‘isn’t getting much love’ as he attempts to continue career

Former Philadelphia Phillies Shane Victorino, Domonic Brown and Jimmy Rollins all agreed to minor league deals with invites to Spring Training this week. However, another former Phillie is still looking for work.

Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe says that Marlon Byrd, looking to play in the big leagues for his 14th season, isn't necessarily close to getting a job like his former teammates did this week.

Byrd, 38, isn’t getting much love on the market, but as teams begin to figure out their final roster spots, don’t be surprised to see someone take a chance on him.

Byrd split last season with the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants, batting .247 with 23 home runs and 58 RBIs. His on-base percentage and OPS both dropped to their lowest totals since 2012. His UZR and dWAR also decreased in 2015 from where they were in 2014.

Byrd has had two different stints with the Phillies. He came up through the Phillies' farm-system but was traded to the Washington Nationals in 2005, after he disappointed in his first three plus seasons. Byrd returned to the Phillies for the 2014 season, signing a two-year/$16 million deal. He would spend just the 2014 season with the Phillies, before he was again traded, this time to the Cincinnati Reds for pitching prospect Ben Lively.
