Eagles reportedly will not use franchise tag on Sam Bradford, may have interest in re-acquiring Nick Foles

On what is already a frustrating enough day for Eagles fans, Super Bowl Sunday came with some unexpected news regarding the past, present, and future of their quarterback position. Adam Schefter of ESPN out in front of these developments.

This is a lot to process for Eagles fans in a matter of Tweets. Sam Bradford, whose immediate and long-term future has been among the more discussed offseason topics in Philadelphia, has the team in a unique situation. Because of the fact that he played 2015 on an expiring contract and did not necessarily blow people away with his performance, one can understand the hesitancy of making him a premium long-term offer. On the other hand, there are so few options at the quarterback position that an organization can legitimately sell to its fans as a viable choice. Bradford flashed his talent at times in 2015 and is likely the top option on the market going forward.

As far as the other storyline, it is rather staggering to see Nick Foles have his name attached to the Eagles. After he was traded to the Rams prior to the 2015 season, it seemed as if Foles would have the opportunity to lead a franchise. Foles struggled with his new team and was eventually unseated as the Rams starter before the season ended. Regardless of how the organization views Foles, he still hasn't played a 16-game season and has failed to deliver on a consistent enough basis in terms of his play on the field. While the Eagles might be able to rid themselves of a bad contract in exchange for Foles, it's hard to imagine that's worth the public outcry over possibly bringing Foles back to Philadelphia.

Depending on how this all shakes out, one can probably only hang his or her hat on the likelihood that Sam Bradford probably won't be here in 2016. It's difficult to imagine the top quarterback on the open market taking a team-friendly deal for an organization he's only played one year for. Since the Eagles appear reluctant to use the franchise tag on Bradford, they will seemingly have to go with another option under center. Whether that is a veteran like Mark Sanchez, a retread like Nick Foles or an unproven option is yet to be seen. One can safely predict that it will be yet another fascinating offseason in Philadelphia.

Update: Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News says that the Eagles aren't interested in bringing back Foles.
