The Phillies entered the offseason with three players under contract but without 2016 contracts. The Phillies first agreed to terms with shortstop Freddy Galvis. Then the club agreed to a new one-year deal with reliever Jeanmar Gomez. That left one: newly-acquired starter Jeremy Hellickson. The Phillies took care of that today.
Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reports that the Phillies and Hellickson have agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal for 2016. Hellickson was acquired in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks this offseason. The Diamondbacks used the savings towards free agent starting pitcher Zach Greinke.
Hellickson is one of many Phillies starters heading into camp. Hellickson will serve as one of the Phillies' more experienced, and hopefully more reliable starters in 2016. The Phillies added Hellickson and starter Charlie Morton to create some stability around the young Phillies starters.
With Hellickson signed, the Phillies have all players for 2016 under contract.
