By the Numbers: Top line breaks through for big win
The Philadelphia Flyers came from behind Wednesday night for a crucial 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins. Jakub Voracek scored on a rebound to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead after a fast-paced, tight checking first period. The game see-sawed back the Bruins way in the second, with Boston utilizing their excellent power play to score the go-ahead goal.
The game was setting up for a tense finish, when the Flyers surged halfway through the third period. The Claude Giroux line, who has been held of the scoreboard during the Flyers recent win streak, provided two goals on rushes.
The Flyers have now won four games in a row, and sit only two points out of a wild card spot. They join a seven-team scrum for the two wild card spots.
Game Flow
Forwards
The relatively new trio of Giroux, Voracek and Wayne Simmonds have had some good games recently, but no goals to show for it. They finally broke through for three goals on Wednesday. They were all over the ice, and absolutely devoured aging Zdeno Chara with a 80% Corsi against him on his way to a minus-3 game.
The Sean Couturier line cooled off, and Brayden Schenn missed some shifts after having to fight, when he laid out Torey Krug with a big, clean hit. Matt Read performed pretty well in his absence. This line was playing against the Bruins' top line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, so the Flyers will take an uneventful game in that matchup.
The Pierre-Edouard Bellemare line had some tough shifts against the Loui Eriksson line, but did better against the Bruins' bottom six.
Lastly, it was an altogether tough game for the Flyers' fourth line. They didn't get much of anything going, and perhaps this sluggish performance will open the door for Jordan Weal to debut this weekend.
Defense
Michael Del Zotto and Radko Gudas played big minutes again, and successfully handled the matchup with the Bruins top line. They held the Bergeron line to a roughly even Corsi and no goals. Mission accomplished.
Mark Streit and Nick Schultz put up some good numbers against the Eriksson line, and Streit added the game-winning goal by putting in a rebound on the rush. The Flyers power play, however, looked poor again, so Streit is not doing much to reclaim the job from Shayne Gostisbehere.
Evgeni Medvedev and Brandon Manning picked up the rest of the slack for the defense. They had some tough moments with the puck down low in their own zone, but their numbers at the end of the day were decent enough. Medvedev even earned extra ice time with Del Zotto.
