WJC Report: Canada, Russia advance to playoff round

The World Juniors tournament continued on Tuesday, and all but three of the Flyers' prospects were active. Some guaranteed that their tournament will extend past the end of the qualifying round on Thursday. Here's how the future Flyers fared on Tuesday:

Canada

The Canadians narrowly topped Switzerland, winning 3-2 in a shootout. Neither Travis Konecny (who has been limited to a checking and defensive role) nor Travis Sanheim recorded a point for the Canadians. By virtue of a regulation win (three points), an overtime win (two points) and a loss (nothing), Canada now has five points in Group A, and will automatically advance to the playoff rounds as they will finish no lower than fourth in their group. They are off until Thursday, when they meet the first-place Sweden.

Russia

Ivan Provorov recorded an assist in Russia's 4-1 stifling of Belarus, while Radel Fazleev was held off the scoresheet. With three helpers in the tournament thus far, Provarov is tied with Maxim Lazarev for second amongst the team. The Russians, who lead Group B (and the overall tournament) with eight points, will play in the playoff rounds as well, and will next face Slovakia on Thursday.

Felix Sandstrom, Oskar Lindblom (each with Sweden) and David Kase (Czech Republic) were all off on Tuesday, and will return tomorrow. Check back for another WJC Report.
