With the Sixers struggling at the point guard position, reports are beginning to surface that Sam Hinkie and company are looking into bringing one of their former point guards into the mix. ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the Sixers are in talks with the Pelicans to acquire Ish Smith. The Sixers will send two future second round picks to the Pelicans, according to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports. The picks will be in the 2016 and 2017 drafts, leaving the Sixers without a second rounder in those drafts.
Last season with Philadelphia, Smith averged 12 points and 6.1 assists in 27.1 minutes per game. He played in 25 games for the Sixers.
This season with New Orleans, Smith, 27, is averaging 8.9 points, 5.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. The Sixers were hoping Kendall Marshall would be able to mend some point guard wounds, but he hasn't, which has made this deal necessary for the team. Sam Hinkie could have held on to Smith this summer, but instead, he now has to forfeit two second round picks.
To make room for Smith, the Sixers will part ways with Tony Wroten, Spears tweets. Wroten recently returned to the lineup after recovering from a torn ACL for 11 months. Wroten averaged 16.9 points and 5.2 assists before his injury last season. This year, he's had some trouble getting things going since coming back. He was averaging 8.4 points and 2.5 assists per game to go along with 3.6 turnovers. Wroten has played eight games this season.
