After selecting outfielder Tyler Goeddel in round one of the 2015 Rule 5 draft, the Phillies were not done. They added a second player in the round two phase of the draft. The second selection was Daniel Stumpf. Stumpf is a left-handed pitcher from the Kansas City Royals organization. Stumpf was originally a ninth round draft pick in the 2012 draft.
Stumpf pitch at AA Northwest Arkansas Naturals in 2015. In 42 games, Stumpf went 5-4 with a 3.57 earned run average. If Stumpf is familiar to some people in the Philadelphia area, it is because Stumpf spent 2014 as a member of the Wilmington Blue Rocks. He went 3-8 with a 3.77 earned run average in 2014.
The Phillies could have lost a player, most notably outfielder Carlos Tocci and pitcher Alberto Tirado. However, neither player is ready for the Major Leagues and no one decided to take the risk, though both players show some promise down the line.
