The winless Sixers suffered another defeat on Thanksgiving: the release of first round draft pick Jahlil Okafor punching someone outside a Boston night club. After the Sixers fell to the Celtics on Wednesday night, Okafor was out on the town and gave in to some hecklers on the Boston streets. The result is going to be another black eye on an embarrassing Sixers season.
TMZ reports the brawl began because of a Sixers heckler:
In the melee, Okafor tumbles to the ground and a man in a green jacket tries to punch the 6'11" superstar in the back of the head.
We're told everyone got up and fled the scene and no arrests were made.
We're told the altercation began because one of the men in the other group yelled at Jahlil, "The 76ers suck."
The video can be seen here:
Even without criminal charges, Okafor could be in deep water with the NBA. While there is no evidence that Okafor entered the club, the club is a 21+ club, but has a dining room where someone underage could eat dinner.
As of Friday morning, the Sixers or the NBA had not responded to the TMZ report. Of course, that is not surprising given the Thanksgiving holiday. The Sixers are scheduled to take on the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center tonight at 8:00.
In year three of the "Tank", Okafor has been one of the bright spots on this Sixers team. Amidst growing skepticism of the movement known as "the process", if the remaining few fans find Okafor to be the most exciting part of Sixers games, some may be further turned away from the team. Could it get even worse?
