Colorado set the tone early. Jerome Iginla scored less than a minute into the first period. Matt Duchene added two second period goals and Colorado crusied past Philadelphia 4-0 Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.
Colorado got the early lead when Jerome Iginla beat Michal Neuvirth from a bad angle just 57 seconds in. Iginla hustled to down the ice to beat out an icing call and flipped an innocent looking shot on net that trickled past the Flyers goalie.
Colorado would get the lone power play in the first period when Mark Streit was called for cross checking at 9:14. The Flyers penalty killers did an outstanding job killing it off.
The Avalanche out shoot the Flyers 15-7 in the opening stanza and held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Colorado would jump on the Flyers again to start the second. This time it took just 25 seconds. Matt Duchene was left alone in front and slammed home the puck to put Colorado up 2-0.
Duchene struck again just about four minutes later. Once again poor rebound control by Neuvirth lead to the goal. Duchene was once again left alone and potted his second of the night to put the Avalanche up 3-0.
Colorado continued to dictate play through the remainder of the period out shooting Philadelphia 14-7 for the period.
Neither team was called for any penalties during the second period and Colorado took a 3-0 lead into the locker room after 40 minutes.
Colorado would extend their early in the third. With Radko Gudas in the box for roughing, Cody McLeod scored his third goal of the season at 2:04 to put Colorado up 4-0.
Philadelphia got their first man advantage at 2:45 but were unable to beat Berra.
From there, Colorado played smart defensive hockey. They cleared pucks, kept almost everything to the outside
Reto Berra made 25 saves for the shutout.
The Flyers are in action Thursday night when they host the Capitals.
