Brayden Schenn opened the scoring with the Flyers first power play goal since the overtime winner in Boston. Wayne Simmonds added a second power play goal midway through the third. The penalty kill went four for four and the Flyers defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-0 on Saturday night.
It was a physical start to game. Both teams did not shy away from contact. It lead to an early 4 on 4 situation when Ryan White and Anthony Peluso took coincedental unsportsmanlike conduct minors. Neither team was able to score with the extra ice.
Philadelphia would get the first power play of the night when Alexander Burmistrov took a tripping penalty at 5:18. It did not take long for Philadelphia to capitalize.
Brayden Schenn scored his fifth goal of the year at 5:54. Schenn hammered a one timer past Ondrej Pavelec. Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek picked up the assists.
Matt Read put the Jets on the power play just two minutes later. The Flyers penalty killers did a good job keeping Winnipeg at bay and killed off the penalty.
The Flyers went back on the power play at 12:19 when Andrew Ladd was called for tripping. The first unit went to work again and spent all but the final 15 seconds of the man advantage in the Jets zone but were unable to capitalize.
The Jets would get a second man advantage of their own at 16:35 when Brandon Manning went off for cross checking. once again Winnipeg came up empty.
Michal Neuvirth made 12 saves and the Flyers went to the locker room up 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The second period saw another steady parade to the penalty box. R.J, Umberger was called for interference at 4:16. Andrew Ladd took exception to the hit and dropped the gloves with Umberger.
The Flyers were able to kill the Jets power play and keep it 1-0.
The Flyers would get their third man advantage at 6:39 when Blake Wheeler was called for boarding. Winnipeg was able to kill it off.
Dustin Byfuglien would put the Jets down a man at 14:38 when he was whistled for hooking. Once again the Flyers top power play unit controlled the puck in the Jets zone for a minute and a half but were turned away.
Each team registered six shots a piece in the period with both goalies making all six saves and the Flyers held a 1-0 lead after two periods.
The Jets carried play at the start of the third. The pressure led to a Radko Gudas roughing penalty. Once again the penalty killers were effective and killed the penalty.
The Flyers would pull ahead 2-0 at 9:44. Wayne Simmonds scored his second goal of the season with Toby Enstrom in the box. Simmonds slammed home a rebound off a Mark Streit shot to give the Flyers the two goal lead.
Winnipeg pulled the goalie with 2:30 remaining. Matt Read took advantage adding an empty net goal with just over a minute to play.
Michal Neuvirth made 25 saves recording his third shutout of the season.
The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday as they welcome the Colorado Avalanche to the Wells Fargo Center.
