A pair of late-game goals from Jacob Josefson on Friday helped the New Jersey Devils cruise to a 3-2 shootout win over the Flyers, in the final preseason game for both teams.
Josefson tied the game at 2 with 3:31 to play in the third period, off a tip-in from Adam Henrique. After the ensuing 3-on-3 overtime period went scoreless, Josefson added the lone shootout goal to secure the win for the Devils.
Ryan White and Jakub Voracek each scored their first preseason goals, with White scoring shorthanded at 11:03 of the second period. Yevgeni Medvedev assisted on the goal, giving him his fifth point of the preseason (and subsequently tying him with Michael Del Zotto for the team lead).
Jiri Tlusty's first preseason goal at 3:36 of the third stanza made it a 1-1 game, but Voracek broke the tie just 1:23 later. Linemate Claude Giroux earned a pair of assists, to boot.
Steve Mason turned away 29 of 31 shots for the Flyers, and two of three in the shootout. Devils starter Cory Schneider countered with 21 saves on 23 shots.
The Orange and Black went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Devils went 1 for 5. Adam Larsson took a double minor for hi-sticking just eight seconds into the game, but the Flyers could not muster any decent opportunities.
Both teams were off to a slow start as well, combining for just 10 shots in the first period (seven for the Devils, and a ridiculously-low three for the Flyers). Shot totals climbed to a respectable 12-11 in favor of the Devils for the second period, 11-7 Devils in the third and 2-1 Flyers in overtime.
With six days now between games, the Orange and Black will next practice on Saturday, and take Sunday off. Their season will open next Thursday with a visit to the defending Eastern Conference champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Flyers and Devils will next meet on Oct. 29 at Wells Fargo Center.
